4 Rules for a Quick & Successful Sclerotherapy Recovery

November 1, 2024

Treatment

Are you going to undergo a sclerotherapy treatment? Here’s everything you need to know about this innovative varicose vein treatment and how to take care of yourself following the procedure to ensure the best results.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a well-established medical procedure, widely used to treat spider and varicose veins. This minimally invasive treatment offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Quick treatment time (approximately 15-30 minutes)
  • Minimal discomfort during the procedure
  • More affordable than surgical options
  • High success rate in relieving symptoms and reducing the appearance of varicose veins

4 Rules for Recovery

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the affected veins, causing them to shrink and gradually fade. While the procedure is generally safe and allows patients to resume regular activities shortly after, following these four rules will ensure a smooth and effective recovery:

1. Wear Compression Stockings

After your sclerotherapy session, wearing compression stockings is essential for at least 2-3 weeks. Your Dermapure specialist will guide you on the right level of compression and how long you’ll need to wear them for optimal healing.

2. Avoid Sun Exposure

To ensure proper healing and avoid complications such as skin discoloration or premature aging, avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks following the procedure. When outdoors, apply sunscreen with SPF 50 to protect the treated area.

3. Refrain From Strenuous Exercise

While you can walk immediately after sclerotherapy, it’s important to avoid intense physical activity for at least three days post-treatment. This will allow your veins to heal properly without added strain.

4. Follow Up with Your Specialist

Scheduling a follow-up appointment with your Dermapure specialist is crucial to monitor your recovery and assess whether any additional treatments are necessary. This step ensures you get the best possible results from your sclerotherapy treatment.

How Long Will It Take for My Veins to Disappear?

Smaller veins usually respond faster to treatment, with spider veins typically disappearing within 3-6 weeks. Larger veins may take up to three months to fade. Once treated, veins generally do not reappear.
