Acne awareness month

The Facts

September is Acne Awareness Month! According to the Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada, acne affects nearly 20% of the population which translates to approximately 5 million Canadians of different ages and ethnicities. While acne is very common amongst teens and young adults, acne is prevalent in adults, particularly women – up to 22%, or 1 in 5 women. The severity can range from mild, to moderate, to severe, and while typically present on the face, it can also affect the neck, chest, back, and shoulders.

The Emotional Impact

As acne typically appears on the face, it has been shown to cause low self-esteem and negative self-image amongst those affected. Acne can have serious long-term psychological and social impacts on those who experience it during adolescence, often becoming a target for teasing or bullying causing feelings of hurt and shame. The Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada has launched a new educational campaign about learning to care for and love your skin – Skin Confidence. It is important that we are aware of these resources and let the people in our lives know there is help!

The Good News

Maybe you have struggled with acne since adolescence, or maybe you are experiencing late onset acne as an adult. The causes vary – hormones, genetics, medications, emotional distress…no matter what your case is, we can help! Dermapure offers the most advanced clinical acne treatment solutions available today, ranging from topical products, to glycolic peels and pulsed light therapy, to laser resurfacing.

The Treatments

At Dermapure, we offer effective clinical treatments that begin clearing the skin and jumpstart your journey to a radiant complexion. These four exfoliating and regenerating treatments target multi-levels of acne:

Mild
1. Glycolic acid peels work on both the skin’s surface to eliminate dead cells, as well as at a deeper layer to effectively destroy acne-causing bacteria and unclog and tighten pores to help prevent future breakouts. Derived from fruit acid, the peel exfoliates the surface to reveal smoother and cleaner skin that is better prepared to absorb topical products and in turn, achieve a more effective treatment.

2. Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin’s surface using diamond crystals, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The skin is then prepared to absorb cosmeceuticals and is left visibly renewed. Pores are tightened, skin texture is refined, and your complexion is left radiant.

Moderate
3. Intense pulsed light is a light therapy resurfacing technique that targets the dermis (the deeper layers of skin) without affecting the top layers in order to destroy the bacteria responsible for acne and reduce inflamed sebaceous glands. The therapeutic action delivered by light is highly precise, safe and effective in the treatment of acne.

Severe
4. Fractional resurfacing, also a light therapy, targets both the dermis and epidermis to greatly improve texture and scarring. By creating micro-perforations in the skin, the highly accurate lasers deeply treat the acne zone while surrounding healthy tissue helps heal the micro lesions to regenerate new skin.

These clinical treatments involve deeper action. Complimented with science-based cosmeceuticals, the rejuvenation journey is significantly accelerated. Concentrated at home treatments such as Functionalab Glycolic Acid Lotion, Glycolic Acid Night Cream and Glycolic Acid Mask refine skin texture, promote cell renewal and improve radiance when used regularly. Combining effective clinical treatments with the diligent use of topical cosmeceuticals will begin clearing acne prone skin and revealing a smooth, even complexion for years to come.
