mompreneur (pl. mompreneurs)
- Mompreneur (familiar) is a term describing women who start or run their own businesses while also acting as a full-time parent, where mompreneur is a combination of the words “mom” and “entrepreneur.”
In this week’s blog, we are interviewing Dermapure Saskatoon’s ambassador Holly Decker, the very definition of a mompreneur!
Dermapure: Holly, you are a busy entrepreneur… and a mom! Can you tell us more about yourself and your different ongoing projects?
Holly: Yes! I love being a mom and an entrepreneur! I am a professional makeup artist and I have been working in the industry for over 17 years. I work in film, tv, editorial, fashion + beauty + bridal.. and so much more. I am also the Beauty Editor of Fresh Magazine and I write monthly beauty + wellness articles.
With Covid, my business has taken a shift to more online platforms including virtual makeup lessons which has been so fun to work with people from all over the world.
Dermapure: With so many occupations, how do you find your personal balance?
Holly: That’s a great question and something I had been searching for, for so many years!
I had a lightbulb moment about 5 years ago. I had the pleasure of doing makeup and spending the day with Arlene Dickinson. After my day with her I became an even bigger fan of hers. I purchased her books as I love her story of being a single mom and one of the most successful entrepreneurs. How did she find balance in this? I was curious. Then I got to her chapter in her book – Balance is bullshit. After reading her book it set me free. I realized that as a single mom + an entrepreneur – there wasn’t balance as both flowed into each other.
What I realized is that I have chosen this way of life as I don’t operate as a 9-5 person and that’s ok! So instead of balance, I try to be more present in moments and I make sure to take time for self-care.
Dermapure: For the mom who is actively pursuing her passion and purpose, what would be your best piece of advice?
Holly: One thing that took me forever to learn is that you can’t please everyone and you have to trust your gut. Do what you love but also be prepared to hustle.
I have also learned that failure is the greatest teacher and that if one door doesn’t open for you, it’s not your door.
But know that there will be many more doors that are meant for you!
And no is a complete sentence.
Dermapure: What is your favorite way to unwind and take care of yourself?
Holly: I love a hot bath, a warm cup of tea, my sweatpants and either a good movie or book.
Dermapure: Do you stick to a regular beauty routine?
Holly: I have always had a regular beauty routine. Since becoming a client of Dermapure of few years ago, my routine is the best. I love my regular services and skin care products are the best.
Dermapure: As a mom of boys, are there certain beauty gestures that you have tried to instill in them?
Holly: I would love to say my boys love makeup but it’s not a huge hit in my home. What I can say is that all three of my boys have an appreciation and respect for my makeup artistry. They also trust my judgment when it comes to skin care, hair care and all things “beauty”
We have a huge selection of beauty products at home and I love when they ask for my advice.
Dermapure: Is there a mom in your life who inspires you? What is the biggest lesson that this person taught you?
Holly: I have been lucky to have so many amazing and inspirational women in my life. My mom and my auntie have inspired me to have an entrepreneurial, independent spirit. They both have always been forward thinking and have encouraged me to follow my dreams, never to give up and to always trust myself. They have shown me what true strength and support is and I’m so grateful to have both of them in my life.
