Sclerotherapy Ottawa

Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive injectable medical treatment performed in clinic to address visible diseased veins. The procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the targeted veins, which gradually close and are then progressively reabsorbed by the body, with blood circulating through the surrounding healthy veins.

Because every patient's vein anatomy and medical history are different, sclerotherapy at our Dermapure Ottawa Downtown clinic always begins with a personalized consultation with a physician or healthcare professional. Together, you will assess whether sclerotherapy is the most appropriate option and discuss the expected results, the recovery and the possible side effects. Book your consultation with our team.

What to Expect During Your Session

Step 1
Personalized assessment
During your consultation, ultrasound is used to map the veins and discover the source of pressure causing the varicose veins. Often the source of the spider or varicose veins are too deep to see with the naked eye. This consultation stage allows for the development of a safe, accurate and effective treatment plan for lasting results. As with any medical consultation, current fees apply.
Step 2
Pre-treatment photos
Before and after photos are an important step in the treatment process, as it allows for visualization of the evolution of your results over time.
Step 3
Sclerotherapy treatment
Lasting 20 minutes, sclerotherapy treatment may give rise to a slight tingling or a feeling of heat during the session. This sensation disappears quickly after treatment. As the treatment involves injection into the veins, naturally some bruising should be anticipated. Bruising due to any cause on the legs generally resolves over 3 weeks, and patients should refrain from unprotected sun exposure until the bruises clear.

Follow-Up & Maintenance

At your initial consultation, the physician will determine how many treatments are required per leg. The number of sclerotherapy treatments necessary depends on the extent of the vein disease and we are limited to the quantity of medication per visit. Closure of the affected veins can be visible within several days however treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks to several months. Support stockings are recommended to promote healthy circulation in the lower limbs and prevent and minimize recurrence. Patients can return to most usual activities post treatment.

Contraindications

Sclerotherapy is contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as a known allergy to the sclerotic agent used. Special consideration is required in people with medical conditions that make them more vulnerable such as hypercoagulability (blood clotting), a history of a deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
