Frown Lines (Glabella)
Frown lines, also called glabellar lines or the 11s, are the vertical creases between the eyebrows. They appear when you frown, squint or concentrate, and are often one of the first lines to stay visible even at rest.
Why the 11s often appear first
The muscles between your brows are strong and you engage them constantly, usually without realizing it, whether you are focusing, reading a screen or reacting to bright light. Because this area is folded so often and so forcefully, the 11s tend to set in earlier than other expression lines.
Why do frown lines form?
The skin between your brows is folded by a small group of muscles every time you frown or focus. These muscles are powerful and active throughout the day, often without you noticing. As the collagen and elastin that keep skin springy decline, the folds they create recover less and less, which is why the 11s are frequently the first lines to remain visible at rest.
Repeated muscle movement
Frowning, squinting and concentrating pull the brows inward and pleat the skin vertically in the same place. Because these expressions are so frequent and often unconscious, the skin is folded along identical lines many times a day, which gradually carves the crease deeper.
Collagen and elastin decline
The fibres that keep skin firm, collagen and elastin, are spun in the dermis by fibroblasts. Between the brows the skin is roughly 2 mm thick, yet it folds hard every time you concentrate or squint. With age fibroblasts make less collagen and elastin is barely replaced. So the glabella, pinched repeatedly, holds a vertical line instead of releasing it.
Sun exposure
Ultraviolet rays, and UVA in particular, reach deep into the skin and break down collagen and elastin faster than the body can rebuild them, a process called photoaging. By some estimates it drives up to 80% of visible skin aging. The weaker the support between the brows, the more readily the line deepens.
Skin hydration
Well-hydrated skin looks plumper and reflects light evenly, which softens fine lines. When the skin barrier, its outer protective layer that seals moisture in, is dry and depleted, the skin between the brows loses water and the same lines fall into shadow and look deeper, even before any real structural change. This is why these lines can seem to come and go.
Oxidative stress and lifestyle
Daily habits pile on. Smoking, alcohol, pollution and too little sleep generate oxidative stress, an excess of unstable molecules called free radicals that corrode collagen and elastin. A sugar-rich diet adds glycation, where sugar stiffens these fibres. Both speed how fast lines between the brows form and set.
