HIFU
Non-invasive lifting and tightening, powered by focused ultrasound.
HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, is a non-invasive treatment that lifts and tightens the skin by directing focused ultrasound energy into its deeper layers. Rather than acting on the surface, HIFU concentrates ultrasound waves at precise depths to gently heat the support structures of the skin, which prompts the body to produce new collagen over the following weeks and months. The result is a gradual firming and lifting effect, with little to no downtime.
How HIFU Works
To understand HIFU, it helps to know what keeps skin firm. Just beneath the surface is a network of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin tight. Deeper down lies the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), a firm layer of tissue and muscle that supports the face like an internal scaffold, the same layer a surgeon tightens during a facelift. With age, collagen breaks down and this support loosens, which we see as sagging and laxity.
HIFU focuses ultrasound energy at set depths beneath the skin, typically 1.5, 3 and 4.5 mm, without affecting the surface. The shallower depths reach the dermis; the deepest, around 4.5 mm, reaches the SMAS. At each point, the energy creates a tiny, controlled point of heat, a thermal coagulation point, that triggers the skin's natural repair process and the production of fresh collagen and elastin. Because this takes time, the lifting and tightening effect develops gradually and keeps improving over the following months.
Our HIFU Treatments
Ultraformer
Ultraformer uses micro- and macro-focused ultrasound, with a range of cartridges that treat at different depths on both the face and the body. This versatility makes it an option when firming and lifting are wanted beyond the face.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy is a micro-focused ultrasound device licensed by Health Canada, designed for the face, brows, neck and décolleté. Its DeepSEE imaging lets the specialist view the skin's layers during treatment, so energy is directed precisely to the targeted depth.
Darwin ProLift
Darwin ProLift is the HIFU treatment on the DARWIN platform, a single machine that combines several technologies. It delivers focused ultrasound at three depths, designed to keep the treatment comfortable, with no downtime.
Follow-Up & Maintenance
HIFU stimulates your own collagen, so its results build gradually and are not permanent. Because your skin continues to age naturally, the lifting and tightening effect is usually maintained with periodic sessions, with the interval planned around your skin and your goals. Your specialist will recommend a realistic schedule and let you know when a follow-up treatment is worth considering, so your results are supported over time.
Side Effects & Contraindications
HIFU is non-invasive and generally well tolerated, but as with any medical treatment, some temporary side effects are possible. Most commonly, you may notice redness, mild swelling, tingling or tenderness in the treated area, which usually settles within a few hours to a few days. Less frequently, temporary numbness or small bruising can occur. HIFU is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active skin infections, open wounds or inflamed areas, or in the presence of certain implants or devices in the treatment area. Because suitability depends on your skin and medical history, your specialist will review the risks, the expected experience and any contraindications, and confirm whether HIFU is appropriate for you, during your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HIFU a safe procedure for face and body treatments?
HIFU is a non-invasive treatment used in aesthetic medicine for skin tightening on both the face and the body, and at Dermapure it is performed by trained specialists using Health Canada-licensed devices. Like any medical treatment, it carries some risks, which is why it always begins with a consultation to confirm it is appropriate for you. Side effects are usually mild and temporary.
What are the potential risks and complications associated with HIFU?
The most common effects are temporary: redness, mild swelling, tingling or tenderness in the treated area, and occasionally short-lived numbness or small bruising. More significant complications are uncommon when the treatment is performed by a trained specialist with appropriate settings. Your specialist will review the full list of possible risks during your consultation and adapt the treatment to your skin.
Can HIFU be combined with other procedures for better outcomes?
Yes, and one of the most complementary pairings is HIFU with collagen-stimulating injectable treatments (biostimulators). The two work toward the same goal, collagen, from different angles. HIFU uses focused ultrasound to heat the deeper structural layers and prompt your skin to rebuild collagen where it has loosened, which firms and lifts. Collagen-stimulating injectables work from within the tissue, where the injected material acts as a scaffold that gradually encourages your body to produce its own new collagen, restoring support and volume. Used together within a personalized plan, HIFU addresses surface laxity and tightening while biostimulators rebuild underlying structure and volume, so they reinforce one another rather than overlap. HIFU can also be planned alongside other in-clinic options, such as dermal fillers, within a broader treatment plan. Your specialist will determine the right combination and timing for you.
What is the recovery time for HIFU?
One of the advantages of HIFU is that it usually requires little to no downtime, and most people return to their normal activities right away. You may notice some redness, mild swelling or sensitivity for a few hours to a few days, and occasionally slight tenderness to the touch. Because the results come from your body producing new collagen, they appear gradually over the following weeks and months rather than immediately.
