Gynecological Lasers
Laser care for intimate health and comfort
Gynecological laser treatments use controlled laser energy to address intimate concerns often linked to childbirth, the natural aging process and menopause, from vaginal dryness and discomfort to laxity and mild stress urinary incontinence. At Dermapure, these treatments are part of a personalized plan built with our experts, who take the time to understand your concerns and determine the most appropriate option. Every treatment begins with a private consultation and is performed in a discreet, respectful clinical setting.
Understanding Gynecological Laser Treatments
Gynecological laser treatments use controlled laser energy to act on the tissues of the vagina and vulva. Most work by gently heating the tissue to stimulate the body's natural collagen production, which can support tissue quality, comfort and, in some cases, bladder control. Some treatments act on the internal vaginal tissue, others on the external vulvar skin, and the right option depends on the concern being addressed. Because these are intimate medical treatments, they always begin with a personalized assessment and a medical screening with our experts, who confirm whether a laser treatment is appropriate for you.
Internal Vaginal Laser Treatments
diVa
diVa is a hybrid fractional laser authorized by Health Canada to address the symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in peri- and post-menopausal women, which include vaginal dryness, burning, irritation and associated urinary symptoms. Through a disposable applicator with automated delivery, diVa directs laser energy to the internal vaginal tissue to support its quality and comfort. It is an office-based treatment that usually takes about five minutes.
IncontiLase
IncontiLase is a non-surgical 2940 nm Er:YAG laser from Fotona, used to address stress urinary incontinence. Its non-ablative Smooth-mode technology gently heats the vaginal tissue to stimulate collagen remodelling and the formation of new collagen fibres, in the region of the vestibule and urethral opening and along the anterior vaginal wall. A session takes about 15 to 20 minutes with no downtime, and most patients need a single treatment.
IntimaLase
IntimaLase is a non-surgical Er:YAG laser treatment used to address vaginal laxity or relaxation that is often linked to childbirth or the natural aging process. Short laser pulses are applied around the full circumference of the vaginal canal, where the controlled thermal effect stimulates the remodelling of collagen in the tissue. A session takes about 15 to 20 minutes with no downtime, and most patients need a single treatment.
External Vulvar Laser Treatment
diVaTyte
diVaTyte is a non-ablative infrared treatment for the external vulvar skin, and is considered a cosmetic procedure. Contact cooling protects the surface while the infrared energy gently warms the deeper layers, prompting the skin's natural repair response to support firmer-looking, more even skin over time. It is often combined with diVa so that both the external and the internal tissue can be addressed. A session takes about 10 to 20 minutes, with no downtime.
Follow-up and Maintenance
Results develop gradually as new collagen forms, often over a few months following treatment, and they vary from one person to another. Depending on the treatment and your concern, a single session may be enough or a short series may be planned, and a maintenance session is sometimes recommended over time, particularly as the natural aging process and hormonal changes continue. Your plan is built and adjusted with our experts based on how your body responds.
Side Effects & Contraindications
As with any medical treatment, gynecological laser treatments can cause side effects. Most are mild and temporary, while some less frequent reactions deserve attention.
- Common side effects: A sensation of warmth or itching can occur during treatment. Afterward, mild swelling, redness and a clear discharge for two to three days are common and usually resolve on their own.
- Less frequent side effects: Temporary discomfort, prolonged irritation or, rarely, infection can occur. Your specialist will review the activity restrictions to follow after treatment, which usually include avoiding intercourse, tampons and intense exercise for a period of time.
- Who should avoid these treatments: These treatments are not offered during pregnancy, in the presence of an active infection or significant pelvic organ prolapse, or after a recent abnormal Pap smear, and they are scheduled outside of menstruation. A medical screening is completed beforehand to confirm that you are a suitable candidate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)?
GSM is a medical term for the genital and urinary symptoms that can appear around and after menopause, such as vaginal dryness, burning, irritation and discomfort, along with urinary symptoms like urgency or recurrent urinary tract infections. diVa is authorized by Health Canada to address the symptoms of GSM in peri- and post-menopausal women. Because GSM is part of menopause, your plan may also take into account other approaches such as hormone therapy, which your specialist can discuss with you.
Can laser treatment help with vaginal dryness and atrophy?
Vaginal dryness and atrophy are common symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). diVa is authorized by Health Canada to address the symptoms of GSM in peri- and post-menopausal women, and works by directing laser energy to the internal vaginal tissue to support its quality. Whether it is appropriate for you is determined during your consultation and medical screening.
Can a laser help with stress urinary incontinence?
IncontiLase is a laser treatment used to address stress urinary incontinence by acting on the anterior wall of the vagina. A non-laser option, Emsella, which uses electromagnetic energy to help strengthen the pelvic floor, may also be considered for urinary incontinence. Your specialist will determine the most appropriate approach for you.
What is the difference between internal and external gynecological laser treatments?
Internal treatments act on the tissue inside the vagina (diVa for GSM, IntimaLase for vaginal laxity and IncontiLase for stress urinary incontinence), while the external treatment, diVaTyte, acts on the vulvar skin and is considered cosmetic. The right option depends on your concern, which your specialist will assess during your consultation.
What is the difference between IntimaLase and IncontiLase?
Both are Fotona laser treatments, but they have different goals. IntimaLase treats the full circumference of the vaginal canal and addresses vaginal laxity, while IncontiLase focuses on the anterior wall of the vagina to address stress urinary incontinence. IntimaLase does little for incontinence, and IncontiLase provides some tissue firming but less than IntimaLase. Your specialist will determine which one fits your concern.
Is there downtime, and what should I avoid afterward?
There is generally no downtime, and most patients return to their usual activities the same day. Your specialist will give you aftercare instructions, which usually include avoiding intercourse, tampons and intense exercise for a period of time after treatment.
How many sessions will I need, and when will I see results?
It depends on the treatment and your concern. Some treatments require a single session, while others are planned as a short series spaced a few weeks apart. Results develop gradually as collagen forms, often over a few months, and vary from one person to another. A maintenance session is sometimes recommended over time. Your specialist will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation.
