Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) Surrey

Hormonal imbalances can affect every aspect of your well-being: energy levels, mood, metabolism and even cognitive function. If you're experiencing fatigue, brain fog, weight gain or a decline in libido, you're not alone. For women, menopause can bring disruptive symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, while men may notice a gradual decline in strength, motivation and overall vitality due to decreasing testosterone levels, often associated with andropause.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) offers a personalized, medically supervised approach to help restore balance and improve your quality of life. Designed to mimic your body's natural hormones, BHRT can help ease symptoms, support healthy aging and help you feel like yourself again. Your treatment plan is tailored to thorough hormone testing and supervised by our medical team at every step.

Take control of your hormonal health, because feeling your best shouldn't be out of reach.

The Main Hormones Used in BHRT

  • Estrogen: contributes to reproductive, bone, and cardiovascular health, as well as overall well-being.
  • Progesterone: plays an important role in the menstrual cycle and reproductive health and works alongside estrogen.
  • Testosterone: contributes to sexual health, muscle mass, and bone health. While it is a key component in comprehensive BHRT plans, it can also be prescribed on its own as a dedicated Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) to directly correct a confirmed deficiency.

What to Expect During Your Session

Every BHRT plan starts with a hormonal health assessment and blood testing, supervised by our medical team.

Step 1
Personalized Assessment

Understanding your hormonal health starts with a comprehensive evaluation. Before your first appointment, blood tests may be required to assess your baseline hormone levels and overall well-being. During your consultation, our medical team will review your medical history, health goals and test results to identify any imbalances that could be affecting your quality of life. Based on this assessment, a customized treatment plan will be designed to restore hormonal balance while prioritizing your safety and individual needs.

Step 2
Proceed with Treatment

Once your personalized BHRT plan is established, our medical team will discuss the expected benefits, the possible risks and side effects, and any questions you may have. You will receive a prescription tailored to your needs, to be filled at a licensed pharmacy. Your medical team will explain the difference between Health Canada approved products and custom-compounded preparations.

Follow-Up & Maintenance

Regular follow-ups are essential for ensuring the effectiveness of BHRT. During these appointments, your hormone levels are reassessed through blood tests, and any necessary adjustments to your prescriptions are made. The frequency of follow-ups varies depending on your medical team's recommendations, typically every 3 to 6 months. Ongoing monitoring helps maintain hormonal balance and allows for timely adjustments to address any changes in symptoms or overall health. This personalized approach supports your long-term well-being.

Side Effects and Risks

As with any prescription treatment, BHRT carries both benefits and risks. They depend on the hormones used, the dose, the form (cream, gel, patch or oral), the duration of treatment and your personal health history.

Common side effects

Most are temporary and tend to settle as the dose is adjusted:

  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Bloating or fluid retention
  • Headaches
  • Spotting or irregular bleeding during the first months
  • Mood changes
  • With testosterone: oily skin, acne or irritation where a cream or gel is applied

Less common but possible risks

  • Blood clots and stroke, particularly with oral estrogen
  • Gallbladder disease
  • A change in breast cancer risk with combined estrogen and progestogen therapy, depending on the type of hormones and the duration of use
  • Thickening of the uterine lining if estrogen is used without progesterone in a person with a uterus
  • With testosterone: an increase in red blood cell count and reduced sperm production, both monitored during follow-up

Our medical team will review the risks that apply to your situation and explain how they will be monitored throughout treatment.

Contraindications

Before starting BHRT, it's essential to undergo a thorough evaluation with our medical team, who will assess your medical history, current health status and any potential risks. BHRT may not be suitable for people who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of breast or endometrial cancer, or another hormone-sensitive cancer
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have active blood clots or a history of stroke
  • Have cardiovascular disease or severe liver disease
