Monopolar RF
Deep, controlled heat to firm the skin and refine contours
Monopolar radiofrequency is the form of RF that reaches deepest. It uses a single electrode in the handpiece and, depending on the device, a return pad on the skin. The energy passes deep through the tissue and builds heat in the collagen-rich layers along the way. This controlled heat does two things at once: it makes existing collagen fibres contract, for an immediate tightening effect, and it stimulates the skin to build new collagen and elastin over the following months. Because the heat reaches deep while the surface is kept protected, monopolar RF suits a wide range of skin types and needs little to no downtime.
What Monopolar RF Can Address
Monopolar RF is most often considered by patients who would like to firm lax or sagging skin and refine their contours on the face, around the eyes, the jawline, the neck or the body. By rebuilding collagen gradually, it is also a way to support the skin's firmness over the years and slow the loss that comes with age. Results develop progressively and vary from person to person; during your consultation, your specialist will assess your skin and your goals and build the treatment plan that fits you best.
Our Monopolar RF Treatments
Thermage
Thermage uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat the deep, collagen-rich layers, while its tip releases a cooling spray that protects the surface and a gentle vibration adds to the comfort. The treatment is carried out in a single session; results then build gradually as new collagen forms, typically peaking two to six months later and lasting around one to two years. Thermage is suitable for all skin types.
Exilis Ultra 360
Exilis Ultra 360 combines monopolar radiofrequency with ultrasound. The device moves over the skin in circular motions and spreads heat all around the treatment area, while built-in temperature control keeps it even and comfortable. This heat renews collagen in the deeper layers: firmness and texture improve gradually, with results usually visible after two to three months. The treatment is carried out over several sessions, on the face and body.
Follow-up and Maintenance
Monopolar RF works progressively: as your body builds new collagen, firmness and texture keep improving for several months after each treatment. These results are not permanent, since your skin keeps aging naturally. To maintain them, many patients come back for periodic sessions: because your skin loses a little collagen every year, treating it regularly helps replace what is lost and keeps building a reserve over time, an idea sometimes called collagen banking. Your specialist will build a personalized plan with you and advise how often sessions make sense for your goals.
Side Effects & Contraindications
Monopolar RF is generally well tolerated, and most effects are mild and temporary.
- Common reactions: a warm sensation during treatment, and temporary redness or minor swelling afterward, which usually settle within a day or two; some patients notice mild surface dryness in the following weeks.
- Less common: a more pronounced or longer-lasting sensitivity and, rarely, a superficial burn or blister.
- Not recommended for: people who are pregnant or breastfeeding; those with a cardiac pacemaker or another active implanted device; or where there are metal implants, active infections, open wounds or unhealed scars in the treatment area. Daily use of anti-inflammatory medication (such as ibuprofen) may also reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
