Face treatments

What is it?

Hooded eyes occur when the skin from the brow area folds over the upper eyelid, partially or fully concealing the natural crease. This can make the eyes appear smaller, heavier, or more closed, and in some cases contribute to a tired or aged look.

For some individuals, hooded eyes are a natural facial feature present from birth. For others, they develop gradually over time as the skin becomes thinner, less firm, and loses structural support. While this change is a normal part of facial aging, it can affect how the eyes look and how someone feels about their appearance.

A common sign of hooded eyes is difficulty seeing the upper eyelid crease when the eyes are open or noticing that eye makeup disappears once applied. Some people also report a sensation of heaviness in the eyelid area.

Did you know?

Hooded eyes are not always caused by aging alone. Genetics, facial anatomy, and even rapid weight loss can play a role. In some cases, changes around the eyes can appear earlier than expected, depending on bone structure and skin quality.

What are the causes?

Several factors may contribute to the appearance of hooded eyes. These can develop gradually or become more noticeable over a shorter period of time.

Genetics

Some people are born with hooded eyes due to inherited facial structure. Brow position, eyelid shape, and skin distribution are largely determined by genetics.

Aging

Over time, the skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity, and the brow may slowly descend. This can create excess skin over the upper eyelid, especially after the age of 40.

Weight Loss

Significant or rapid weight loss, including weight loss associated with GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, can reduce facial fat. When volume is lost too quickly around the eyes, the skin may lose support and fold more prominently over the eyelid.

Lifestyle Habits

Sun exposure, smoking, lack of sleep, and chronic stress can weaken the skin’s structure over time. These factors reduce collagen production and skin resilience, making the eyelid area more prone to sagging.

Prevention

While hooded eyes cannot always be prevented, certain habits can help support skin quality and slow visible changes.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and essential nutrients supports collagen production and skin health. Proper hydration and sufficient restorative sleep also play an important role in maintaining skin tone and resilience.

Protect the skin from the sun

Daily sun protection helps preserve collagen and elasticity in the delicate eye area, reducing premature skin laxity.

Use adapted cosmeceutical products

Medical-grade skincare formulated for the eye area can support hydration, improve texture, and protect against environmental stressors.

How to treat?

plasma-vivifiez-votre-regard

Plasma Fibroblast

Plasma fibroblast is a non-invasive treatment designed to improve skin firmness by stimulating collagen production at the surface of the skin. Using controlled micro-injuries, it encourages tissue contraction and gradual tightening.

This option is typically considered for mild to moderate hooding when excess skin contributes to a heavier appearance of the upper eyelid. It allows for targeted correction without surgery, while respecting the delicacy of the eye area.

Injectable Brow Lift

In some individuals, hooded eyes are primarily related to the position of the brow rather than excess eyelid skin alone. Targeted injections can be used to subtly support or reposition the brow, helping to reduce downward pressure on the upper eyelid.

This approach aims to restore balance and openness to the eye area while preserving natural facial expression. Treatment is carefully tailored to facial anatomy and is often integrated into a broader plan.

Ultherapy in Calgary

Ultherapy

Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production in deeper layers of the skin. When applied to the brow and upper eye region, it can help improve firmness and provide a subtle lifting effect over time.

Because it targets foundational tissue without affecting the surface of the skin, Ultherapy is often selected for patients seeking gradual improvement in brow support and skin tightness without downtime.

CO₂ Fractional Laser

CO₂ fractional laser treatments work by creating controlled micro-columns in the skin, triggering a regenerative response that improves texture, firmness, and skin quality.

In carefully selected cases, this technology may be used to address more pronounced skin laxity or textural changes in the upper eyelid area. Due to the sensitivity of the region, treatment planning is precise and conservative, with a focus on safety and long-term skin health.

Fotona SmoothEye

Fotona SmoothEye is a non-ablative laser treatment specifically designed for the peri-ocular area. It gently heats the tissue to stimulate collagen production and improve skin firmness without damaging the surface.

This option is often chosen for early signs of hooding or fine textural changes, offering a gradual improvement with minimal recovery.

Thermage

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to heat deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen remodeling and improving firmness over time.

When used around the brow and upper eyelid region, it can help address skin laxity contributing to a heavy appearance, with results that develop progressively following treatment.

Exilis Ultra 360

Exilis Ultra 360 is a non-invasive treatment used to improve the appearance of hooded eyes by addressing skin laxity around the brow and upper eyelid area. Using a combination of radiofrequency and ultrasound energy, it delivers controlled heat to the deeper layers of the skin to support collagen structure and improve tissue firmness. Over time, this helps enhance support in the periocular area, contributing to a more open, lifted, and rested-looking gaze, without surgery or downtime.

Microneedling treatment

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy through fine needles to stimulate collagen production at controlled depths. This approach helps improve skin texture and firmness while supporting overall skin quality.

Thread Lift

Thread lift procedures use resorbable threads placed beneath the skin to provide subtle lifting and support. Over time, these threads also stimulate collagen production.

This option may be considered when brow position plays a significant role in the appearance of hooded eyes, offering a minimally invasive alternative for select patients.

Exosome Therapy

Exosome therapy is not used as a standalone solution for hooded eyes. Instead, it may be incorporated following certain treatments—such as laser resurfacing, RF microneedling, or plasma fibroblast—to support skin recovery and optimize overall skin quality.
Rich in regenerative signals, exosomes help promote healing, reduce inflammation, and support long-term skin health around the eyes.
