Face treatments

What is it?

Cellulite is a common skin condition that gives the skin a dimpled, uneven look, similar to an orange peel. It often appears on the thighs, buttocks, hips, and abdomen, but can also affect the arms, lower back, and calves. While harmless, it can impact how the skin looks and feels.

Beneath the surface, fat cells are held in place by fibrous bands, which are thin strands of connective tissue. When circulation in the area slows down, fluid can build up, and fat cells can expand. This creates pressure under the skin. Over time, the fibrous bands pull the skin downward while the swollen fat cells push upward, leading to the uneven texture known as cellulite.

Different stages of cellulite :

stade 1 cellulite

Stage 1

The skin appears smooth when standing or sitting. Slight dimpling may only be noticeable when the skin is pinched. This is the mildest form of cellulite and generally responds well to early intervention.

stade 2 cellulite

Stage 2

The uneven texture is now visible without pinching, especially when muscles are flexed or under certain lighting. Skin may start to feel less firm. Targeted treatments can still lead to significant improvement.

stade 3 cellulite

Stage 3

Dimples and irregularities are clearly visible at rest. The skin may appear heavier or less toned. Results remain possible but typically require more time and consistency.

stade 4 cellulite

Stage 4

Cellulite is deeper and more persistent. At this stage, it is more difficult to eliminate and may respond more slowly to treatment.

Although cellulite primarily raises aesthetic concerns, it can also cause localized sensitivity and pain (in rare circumstances and at an advanced stage).

Did you know?

Nearly 9 out of 10 women will develop cellulite in their lifetime, regardless of their size, versus 1 man out of 50!

What are the causes?

Cellulite is a normal physiological phenomenon that results from the combination of several factors:

Hormones

Female hormonal changes are the main cause of cellulite, especially at the time of puberty, pregnancy and menopause. During estrogenic hormone outbreaks, fat cells that are responsible for storing fats are overfilling so that they compress the blood and lymphatic vessels. Water retention, poor circulation and elimination of toxins follow, causing a bulging “quilted” appearance on the surface of the skin.

Physiognomy

The structure of adipose tissues, which comprises all fat cells, differs in both women and men. The partitions of human adipose tissues are criss-crossed and form a kind of lattice difficult to puncture. In women, these partitions are thinner and arranged perpendicular. When there is an increase in adipose tissue, the fat cells stored there are forced upward and are compressed between partitions – such as balls compacted in a net. This is how an irregularity is created on the surface of the skin.

Age

Collagen is a protein present in the body that ensures firmness, suppleness, cohesion and hydration to the skin. From the age of 25, the natural production of collagen slows down gradually. The surface of the skin is weakened and loosens, accentuating the appearance of cellulite.

Other

Other factors may promote the emergence or development of cellulite, such as: heredity, overweight, lack of physical activity, poor diet, stress, problems with blood or lymphatic circulation, smoking and alcohol.

How to prevent?

Physical activity

Practice a sport regularly to activate blood circulation and strengthen muscles. Focus on activities that solicit the muscles of the buttocks, thighs and abdomen such as swimming, biking, running and skating.

Hydration

1-2 litres per day for better blood and lymphatic circulation. Avoid sparkling water that promotes fluid retention.

Healthy eating habits

Adopt a balanced diet low in refined sugars and fats. Include green cabbage, onions and peppers – which eliminate toxins and promote the metabolism of fats; leeks and Pineapples – to counteract water retention; eggplant and other fibre-rich foods – which stop fats assimilated during a meal by absorbing them; red berries – which promote blood circulation; and green tea, with a thousand and one anti-cellulite virtues!

Sodium-free diet

Avoid the consumption of salt in your food, which also promotes water retention.

Comfortable clothing

Avoid tight clothing that compresses and immobilizes the tissues and slows down blood circulation.

Daily massage

Daily massaging of the legs helps to stimulate circulation and promote the elimination of toxins.

How to treat?

Venus Freeze

Venus Freeze/Venus Legacy

Combining pulsed magnetic fields with multi-polar radio frequencies, the Venus Freeze/Venus Legacy continuously heats the skin from the inside. This controlled heating promotes cellulite reduction by stimulating circulation and improving tissue quality, helping the skin appear smoother and firmer.

Radiofrequency remodels the body by stimulating the production of collagen, elastic fibers, and supporting tissues. The treatment targets subcutaneous fat to help reshape body contours and reduce the appearance of cellulite, creating a more toned and refined skin texture.

This treatment should be done in multiple sessions for optimal results. However, there is often an improvement in skin appearance as early as the 4th or 5th session.

Thermage

Thermage

Thermage offers a non-invasive approach to improve the appearance of mild to moderate cellulite, thanks to a unipolar RF-based technology. The treatment simultaneously allows the tightening of the skin structure and stimulate the production of new collagen. Visible improvements to the skin surface and remodeling are observed as the body follows its normal cycle of collagen regeneration.

In most cases, only one session is required to observe results.

EMTONE

EMTONE helps reduce the appearance of cellulite by addressing multiple underlying causes at once. It combines radiofrequency energy, which gently heats the deeper layers of the skin, with targeted pressure energy delivered through mechanical vibrations.

The heat stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which helps firm and strengthen the skin from within. At the same time, the vibrations work to disrupt the rigid fibrous bands beneath the surface that pull the skin downward and create dimpling.

This combination also supports better blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the treated area, helping the body clear out waste and excess fluid. Together, these effects lead to visibly smoother, more even skin over time.

VelaShape

VelaShape is a non-invasive treatment that helps reduce the appearance of cellulite by combining suction, infrared light, and radiofrequency. The suction isolates the targeted area while the heat from the infrared and radiofrequency energy penetrates deep into the tissue.

This thermal energy helps loosen the tight fibrous bands beneath the skin that cause dimpling. At the same time, it stimulates collagen production and supports fat breakdown, leading to visibly smoother, firmer skin over time.

Collagen-stimulating injectables

Collagen-stimulating injectables, such as Sculptra, are an advanced option to improve the appearance of cellulite by targeting one of its root causes: weakened skin structure. These injectables contain biocompatible ingredients that gradually stimulate the body’s natural collagen production, helping to reinforce the skin from within.

When injected into areas affected by dimpling or volume loss, they work to restore support beneath the surface. Over time, this collagen regeneration helps to thicken the dermis, reduce visible depressions, and create a smoother, more even skin texture. This is particularly beneficial in areas like the buttocks and thighs, where cellulite is often more prominent.

By addressing both skin laxity and structural changes in the tissue, collagen-stimulating injectables offer a gradual yet effective improvement. This treatment works in synergy with the body’s natural processes and can be a valuable addition to a personalized approach to cellulite reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do women have more cellulite than men?

Cellulite is more common in women primarily due to differences in skin structure, fat distribution and hormone levels. In women, the fibrous bands that connect the skin to deeper tissues are arranged vertically, making it easier for fat cells to push through and create a dimpled appearance. Men have a crisscrossed structure that provides more support. Additionally, hormones like estrogen can affect circulation, fat storage and collagen production, all of which influence how cellulite forms.

At what age do females get cellulite?

Cellulite can appear at any age, often starting around puberty when hormones begin to change. It can also become more noticeable during other hormonal phases like pregnancy or menopause. Because cellulite is influenced by hormones, skin structure and genetics rather than weight alone, it can affect women of all ages and body types. Healthy skin habits can help support firmness and slow its progression over time.

Are there surgical solutions for cellulite?

Yes, there are surgical options for cellulite, although they are limited. The main technique is called subcision, performed manually with a small blade (surgical subcision) or using branded devices such as Cellfina or Cellulaze. These procedures work by cutting the fibrous bands under the skin to release deep dimples. They can provide long-lasting improvement for well-defined cellulite but do not treat skin laxity, so they are sometimes combined with non-surgical tightening treatments for optimal results.

Does cellulite go away when you lose weight?

Cellulite doesn’t necessarily disappear with weight loss, because it’s influenced as much by skin structure as by the amount of subcutaneous fat. Losing weight can reduce its appearance if the fat layer becomes thinner, but it can also make cellulite more noticeable if the skin loses firmness, especially after rapid or significant weight loss. In short, weight loss can help, but it doesn’t always eliminate cellulite.
