In Dermapure clinics across Kelowna, sclerotherapy is offered as a recognized treatment for visible veins. The procedure involves injecting a saline or specialized solution directly into the vein, causing it to close and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. As a result, blood flow is naturally redirected to healthier veins, helping to reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins.
Sclerotherapy is a well-established option for the treatment of visible veins, particularly spider veins and certain superficial varicose veins. For larger or deeper varicose veins, other medical treatments may be more appropriate. During a consultation, our team will assess your specific situation and recommend the most suitable approach for your needs. Most patients are able to return to their usual activities shortly after sclerotherapy, though wearing compression stockings for about a week is generally recommended to support recovery.
During your consultation, ultrasound is used to map the veins and discover the source of pressure causing the varicose veins. Often the source of the spider or varicose veins are too deep to see with the naked eye. This consultation stage allows for the development of a safe, accurate and effective treatment plan for lasting results. As with any medical consultation, current fees apply.

Lasting 20 minutes, sclerotherapy treatment may give rise to a slight tingling or a feeling of heat during the session. This sensation disappears quickly after treatment. As the treatment involves injection into the veins, naturally some bruising should be anticipated. Bruising due to any cause on the legs generally resolves over 3 weeks, and patients should refrain from unprotected sun exposure until the bruises clear.

The number of sclerotherapy treatments necessary depends on the extent of the vein disease and we are limited to the quantity of medication per visit. Closure of the affected veins can be visible within several days however treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks to several months.
Support stockings are recommended to promote healthy circulation in the lower limbs and prevent and minimize recurrence. Patients can return to most usual activities post treatment.
Sclerotherapy is contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as a known allergy to the sclerotic agent used. Special consideration is required in people with medical conditions that make them more vulnerable such as hypercoagulability (blood clotting), a history of a deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
