Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to achieve long-term hair reduction and finally say goodbye to razor burn, ingrown hairs, and endless shaving. But like any medical-aesthetic treatment, proper preparation and aftercare are key to maximizing your results.

Whether you’re planning your first session or just curious about how it all works, here’s a short and practical guide to help you get ready, and feel confident, every step of the way.

Before Your Appointment: Get Your Skin Ready

  • Shave, but don’t wax or pluck. You should shave the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. This allows the laser to reach the hair follicle below the surface. Waxing or plucking removes that follicle—leaving the laser nothing to target.
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners. Tanned skin (natural or artificial) increases the risk of irritation, burns, and pigment changes. Stay out of the sun for at least two weeks before your treatment, and exfoliate well to remove any leftover self-tanner.
  • Pause photosensitizing products. Retinoids, acids, or certain acne medications can increase skin sensitivity. You may need to stop using them several days in advance. Check with your treatment provider.

During Your Appointment: What to Expect

  • The session will be quick. Depending on the area, treatments can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Most people find them very tolerable.
  • Does it hurt? Many describe the sensation as a quick snap, like a rubber band against the skin. Some areas are more sensitive than others, but the discomfort is brief and manageable. Numbing cream may be available for more sensitive zones.
  • Is it effective right away? You’ll start to notice shedding after 2–3 weeks. But because hair grows in cycles, you’ll need multiple sessions (usually 6–8) spaced a few weeks apart for optimal results.

Aftercare: Help Your Skin Heal

  • Avoid heat, sun, and friction. For 24–48 hours after your treatment, skip hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts. Avoid sun exposure and always apply SPF to the treated area.
  • Moisturize and treat gently. Use fragrance-free, soothing lotions or gels like aloe vera to hydrate your skin and reduce redness or sensitivity.
  • Don’t wax or pluck between sessions. Let the hair shed naturally. Shaving is fine if needed, but avoid anything that removes the hair from the root

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients need between 6 and 8 sessions, depending on the area treated, hair thickness, and skin tone.

Can I shave before my appointment?

Yes, absolutely. You should shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before your session. This helps the laser focus precisely on the hair follicle below the skin.

Can I wax or pluck before laser hair removal?

No. Waxing and plucking remove the entire hair root, leaving nothing for the laser to target. Avoid both for at least 4 weeks before your appointment.

Can I get laser hair removal if I have a tan?

It’s best to wait until your tan has completely faded. Tanned skin increases the risk of side effects like hyperpigmentation or burns.

Can laser hair removal be done anywhere on the body?

Yes! Common areas include underarms, bikini, legs, face, and back—for both women and men.

Will the hair grow back?

Laser hair removal leads to long-term hair reduction. However, hormonal changes or genetics may cause some regrowth over time, which can be managed with touch-up sessions.
