In the quest for vibrant, glowing skin, the journey often involves addressing various imperfections such as dull complexion, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and acne. While there’s no miracle solution to instantly transform the skin, glycolic peels offer a remarkably effective solution. Discover our latest innovation: the Dermapure Signature Peel Powered by Functionalab. With clinically proven active ingredients, this rejuvenating treatment offers comprehensive skin revitalization in just 30 minutes. It’s your ticket to radiant skin, conveniently timed to fit into your lunch break.

Join us as we break down the science behind this transformative peel, guided by the expertise of Dr. Weksberg, esteemed dermatologist at Dermapure Toronto, and Maryam Davoodzadeh, Dermapure training specialist. Together, we’ll unravel everything you need to know – from suitability for different skin types to post-treatment expectations, ensuring you’re well-equipped to embark on your path to luminous skin.

How does glycolic acid work?

“Glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), primarily sourced from sugar cane but also found in natural sources like sugar beets, pineapple, cantaloupe, and unripe grapes, serves as a powerhouse for skin exfoliation.” explains Dr. Weksberg.

“AHAs work by delicately shedding dead skin cells, resulting in a smoother, more refined skin texture,” Dr. Weksberg elaborates. “This exfoliation not only brightens the skin but also diminishes hyperpigmentation, improving overall skin tone. Its widespread use is attributed to its effectiveness and its generally well-tolerated nature.”

Research has demonstrated that glycolic acid not only increases skin thickness but also promotes collagen synthesis and enhances the quality of elastic fibers. As the star ingredient in the Dermapure Signature Peel, glycolic acid offers both gentle and potent exfoliation, amplifying the effectiveness of other ingredients.

The Signature Peel benefits

Dr. Weksberg and training specialist Maryam Davoodzadeh highlight the many benefits of:

 GLYCOLIC ACID

› Anti-aging and photodamage: Reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discoloration associated with sun damage.

› Exfoliation: Refines skin texture and unclogs pores.

› Increased cell turnover: Accelerates the skin’s natural renewal process, leading to a reduction of pigmentation and contributing to an anti-aging effect.

› Stimulating collagen and hyaluronic acid: Reduces the appearance of wrinkles and promotes overall skin rejuvenation.

› Hydration: Acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin, enhancing hydration levels for a plump and supple complexion.

DERMAPURE SIGNATURE PEEL

› Efficacy: Thanks to Functionalab’s Professional Glycolic Peel Slow-Release technology, the active ingredients remain active for a longer period in the skin, resulting in greater efficacy when compared to other professional peels.

› Treatment time: Accomplished within a mere half-hour, the Signature Peel seamlessly integrates into the tightest of schedules.

› Versatility: The Dermapure Signature Peel serves as an excellent preparatory step for laser treatments, delivers brightening effects when used independently, and as a maintenance treatment between laser sessions.

What skin types are suitable for the Signature Peel?

“Glycolic acid peels are generally considered safe for all skin types and tone, but particular attention is necessary for individuals with very sensitive skin and naturally darker skin types V and VI.” explains Dr. Weksberg.

To mitigate potential irritation, Functionalab has developed Glycolic Peel Slow-Release technology. This innovation enables the active ingredients to penetrate the skin gradually over an extended period, minimizing the risk of skin irritation. Consequently, the Signature Peel becomes an interesting option for those with heightened skin sensitivity.

Moreover, the peel is always tailored to accommodate the patient’s skin sensitivity. Dermapure technicians undergo comprehensive training to assess comfort levels and monitor skin reactions throughout the session, ensuring the treatment is adapted accordingly for optimal results and comfort.

How to prepare the skin before a Signature Peel?

Preparation is crucial for ensuring the best outcomes from any treatment. In the week before your appointment, training specialist Maryam Davoodzadeh recommends:

Minimize sun exposure: This includes avoiding sun exposure and sunless tanning products to prevent skin sensitization.

Discontinue certain skincare products: Temporarily cease the use of retinols, AHAs, BHAs, and peroxides in your skincare routine to minimize the risk of irritation.

Maintain daily moisturization: Continue using your daily moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.

Avoid hair removal treatments: Steer clear of hair removal treatments such as waxing, threading, and depilatory creams to prevent skin irritation.

To enhance the efficacy of the peel, Maryam Davoodzadeh recommends incorporating Functionalab skincare products into your routine. “Adding exfoliating products such as the Functionalab Triple Action Peel Pads, Glycolic Acid Night Cream, or Micro Pearl Exfoliator to their skin routine can amplify the brightening effect of the peel. Additionally, applying Pre/Post-Treatment 2 Cream at least two weeks before the peel ensures optimal skin hydration. It effectively replenishes the skin barrier with essential lipids such as ceramides, promoting optimal skin health and resulting in enhanced outcomes.” she says.

What happens during and after the peel?

The standout feature of the Signature Peel? Its lightning-fast completion in under 30 minutes! This speedy treatment utilizes a glycolic acid concentration ranging from 20% for initial sessions to 30% for subsequent ones, tailored to your skin’s sensitivity levels. The solution is applied for a brief 3-5 minutes during the first peels and 5-8 minutes for subsequent treatments.

Your practitioner will kick off by thoroughly cleansing and exfoliating your skin, prepping with alcohol to remove any oily film from the surface to ensure optimal penetration of the peel solution. Following the application of a protective cream to shield sensitive areas such as the inner and outer corners of your eyes, around the nasal openings, and the lip vermilion border, protective eyewear will be carefully placed over your eyes. Once prepped, a thin layer of glycolic acid is smoothed over your skin and left on for the appropriate amount of time. Post-peel, your skin is treated with a personalized Functionalab serum, followed by the Tensing Eye Complex, Pre/Post-Treatment Cream 2, Collagen Infusion Lip Serum, and Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50.

Despite its intimidating name, the professional peel is quite gentle. Expect mild to moderate tingling during application, with minimal to no discomfort. Following the treatment, you may experience temporary redness and sensitivity, followed by a few days of peeling as your skin undergoes renewal.

Skin care following a professional glycolic acid peel

Protecting your skin following your peel is crucial as glycolic acid may increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Opt for a mineral sunscreen formula with SPF 50 to shield your skin from UV exposure and replenish moisture throughout the peeling process.

Given the increased sensitivity after a glycolic peel, steer clear of harsh skincare products, such as those containing retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and benzoyl peroxide, until advised otherwise by your skincare professional.

“After the treatment, a tailored at-home skincare regimen using Functionalab products will be recommended to optimize and extend the outcomes of in-clinic procedures,” explains training specialist Maryam Davoodzadeh. “Functionalab provides a comprehensive selection of products addressing diverse skin concerns, with the Pre/Post Treatment 2 Cream and Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 being particularly beneficial post-peel.”

How often to do a professional glycolic acid peel?

For optimal results, this peel can be done at a minimum of every two weeks depending on your skin sensitivity. Your Dermapure expert will make sure to determine a frequency that works for your skin’s needs.
