Dry Skin? Itchiness, tightness, flaking, roughness, redness, and eczema are dry skin symptoms which tend to increase during the winter season.Heating and very cold temperatures reduce the ambient humidity and so the skin is found in a state of water loss. Some minor changes to your beauty routine can help soothe the skin significantly.

Dr. Tremblay, dermatologist, Chief Medical Officer Dermapure and Project Skin, answers the most common questions about skin hydration.

Dry skin – 5 Tips about Skin Hydration

Dry Skin Question #1: When is it better to hydrate?

Dr. Tremblay: Immediately out of the shower or bath. Long, hot showers remove the skin’s moisture and protective oils. We should limit showers to a maximum of ten minutes and keep the water as cool as possible to limit the loss of oils that dries out the skin. Of course, in times of extreme cold, it’s easier said than done. I suggest locking moisture in the skin by applying a cream or lotion within three minutes out of the shower or bath.

Dry Skin Question #2: Which ingredients should be in our moisturizers?

Dr. Tremblay: The secret to keeping your skin healthy during the winter months is to prevent water loss in the skin’s protective barrier. When skin loses water, it dries out, and becomes itchy and irritated. The best way to strengthen and protect the protective barrier of the skin is daily use of creams containing humectant ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and oats. We must also avoid soaps, cleansers and removers containing drying ingredients and instead opt for alcohol-free mild detergents and moisturizers.

Dry Skin Question #3: I find my skin feels dryer after shaving, is this normal?

Dr. Tremblay: Shaving can actually irritate dry skin. While shaving the hair, it also removes natural oils from the skin. It is therefore preferable to use another method of hair removal if the skin is particularly dry, especially in winter. This is a good time of year to try laser hair removal.

Dry Skin Question #4: My lips are really dry, cracked and chapped, what can I do?

Dr. Tremblay: First, we must resist the temptation to lick and bite dry lips which can aggravate them. It’s also a great idea to moisturize with a cream or lip balm. Special attention must be taken when buying lip products sold without prescription because many contain ingredients that can dry your lips more, which will force you to re-apply again and again. Opt for a lip balm or cream that contains beeswax, shea butter, coconut butter, sweet almond oil and other more natural ingredients. It is also shown that hyaluronic acid lip injections help moisturize from the inside out making them softer, smoother, and plumper.

Dry Skin Question #5: My feet are so dry that they itch, and it keeps me awake at night. What can I do?

Dr. Tremblay: Basic vitamin E creams that can be found everywhere are effective if used every day. Also, urea is one of the most moisturizing ingredients especially if applied at bedtime followed with cotton socks for the entire night.
